Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, Malaysia

It took five days for our leg muscles to recover from our mountain climb! We spent this time in Kota Kinabalu catching up with washing and doing some research for our Trans Siberian train trip and booking hotels for Macau and Hong Kong.
While exploring the city we came across a cultural festival. A huge grassed area was set out with little tents of the different tribes in the Borneo area and they displayed their handicrafts, food and played traditional music and danced. The Minister of Culture arrived in the evening and they sang and danced for him.
We met a Sikh whose family arrived in Malaysia 100 years ago to fight for the British. He had just returned form his first visit to India and was shocked! He said it was noisy, dirty and crowded so he stayed inside the Amritsar temple for a week as he didn't like it outside!
The slow graceful dancing by this family reminded us of the Thai dancers.

This was the only tribe with clothes made from local materials. The shirt was like a beaten kind of bark.

This was as close as we got to a Head Hunter! He was very proud of his headress with its wild boar tusks.
